Under the auspices of the respected Dean of the College of Dentistry/ University of Baghdad, Professor Dr. Raghad Abdel Razzaq Muhammad, the respected Prof. Dr. Iman Ali Al-Rubaie GlycoRNAs presented a symposium entitled “GlycoRNAs”, in the presence of a number of faculty members in the College of Dentistry.
The symposium aimed to inform the participants about a new scientific discovery of RNA molecules in scientific research carried out by an American scientific team in 2021 entitled “Small RNAs are modified with N-glycans and displayed on the surface of living cells”
In sum, the framework in which glycobiology is presently understood excludes RNA as a substrate for N-glycosylation. Their discovery of glycoRNA suggests the current view is incomplete and points to a new axis of RNA glycobiology, including as of yet undiscovered biosynthetic and trafficking mechanisms. Further, it highlights the possibility that cell surface glycoconjugates, which mediate and regulate important inter-cellular interactions, may now have an expanded template base to include RNA
