Under the auspices of the Respected Dean of the College of Dentistry, Prof. Dr. Raghad Abdul Razzaq Mohammed Al-Hashemi
The College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific symposium entitled “Open Fracture” presented by Ms. Dr.. Wafaa Mansour, in the presence of a number of faculty members.
Symposium objective: The first line in dealing with open fractures aims to reduce the risk of infection, which is life-threatening.
The symposium topics:
An open fracture, also called a compound fracture, is a type of bone fracture in orthopedics that often results from high-energy trauma. It is a bony fracture associated with a break in the continuity of the skin which can cause complications such as infection and nonunion. The Gustilo classification of open fractures is the most widely used method for grading open fractures, to guide treatment and to predict clinical outcome.
Most important recommendations: The use of cephalosporins as a general first-line antibiotic. Antibiotics are continued for 24 hours to reduce the risk of infection. Therapeutic irrigation, wound debridement, early wound closure and bone fixation are the main management of open fractures. All of these measures aim to reduce the risk of infection.
