In October, under the sponsorship of the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Dr. Raghad Abdul Razzaq Al-Hashimi, an online seminar titled “Early Detection of Breast Cancer” was held using the Google Meet platform. This event was part of the activities of the Electronic Health Unit for the academic year 2023-2024, taking place on Monday, the 23rd of October 2023.
The seminar was presented by Dr. Shaimaa Raouf Al-Hasani, a lecturer at the College of Medicine, University of Kufa, specializing in obstetrics, gynecology, and infertility.
Dr. Al-Hasani highlighted the methods and benefits of early detection of breast cancer, emphasizing the importance of regular self-examination. The seminar was attended by several faculty members and staff, aiming to promote early screening and raise awareness about the significance of breast self-examination.
Dr. Shaimaa Al-Hasani briefly defined breast cancer as a disease that occurs when mutations happen in breast cells, leading to uncontrolled growth and abnormal spread. In advanced stages, the tumor can extend to other areas within the breast or metastasize to other parts of the body.
She also presented worldwide statistics, indicating that there are 1.38 million new cases of breast cancer annually, resulting in 458,000 deaths. While the disease is more common among women, men are also susceptible to it, albeit to a lesser extent.
The discussion also focused on risk factors that increase the likelihood of infection and ways to avoid exposure to these factors.
