Professor at the College of Dentistry / University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr.Shatha Qassim Jawad, Published a valuable research entitled (Comparison of the Folate and Homocysteine Levels with A80G -RFC1 Gene Polymorphism between the Sample of Iraqi Children with and without Down Syndrome).
The aim of this research was to compare the level of homocysteine and folate and the role of polymorphisms of some genes in a sample of Iraqi children with down syndrome and compare it with normal healthy children, in order to understand some of hereditary and environmental factors of this disease.
The genetic study also compare the genotype and polymorphisms of the gene RFC1 in the DS children and healthy patients by utilizing the polymerization technology; the results showed that the precentage of genotype AG was reduced within DS children but stastically there was no significant difference.
While the percentage of AA genotype was highest within DS children but statistically, this had no significant difference.
The study concluded that polymorphism of this gene had no significant effect depending on OR test results. Additionally, there was a significant decrease in the concentration of Hcy and folate in the serum of DS children and there was no significant difference between male and female DS patients.
