The General Pharmacology and Physiology Laboratory was established in the 1960s in the old building of the College of Dentistry. The current laboratory was established in the 1990s during the founding of the Basic Sciences Department in 1991. The laboratory is considered one of the essential laboratories belonging to the Basic Sciences Department, as it is part of the College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad. The Pharmacology and Physiology Laboratory is located on the second floor of the Basic Sciences Department building. The General Pharmacology and Physiology Laboratory includes qualified and experienced specialists holding doctoral and master’s degrees, as well as qualified technical staff. The laboratory is shared between the Physiology course for the second year and the Pharmacology course for the third year.
The efforts of the Pharmacology laboratory focus on the correct, effective, and safe understanding and use of medications in our lives, which facilitates the correct and safe treatment of diseases and health conditions that dentists encounter during their training at the college hospital and during their treatment of patients. This aims to produce competent dentists capable of meeting the health needs of individuals and the community and treating conditions within their specialization, while avoiding the misuse of medications. The practical pharmacology course for third-year dental students aims to teach them how drugs work in the body, methods of drug administration, correct dosages, and the side effects and toxicity of various medications. It also aims to teach students how to write correct prescriptions and focuses on medications prescribed by dentists.
The work of the General Physiology laboratory focuses on teaching second-year dental students how to conduct practical experiments related to physiology and how to use various scientific equipment, such as using light microscopes and examining blood samples to diagnose various diseases. The curriculum also includes teaching the fundamentals of human physiology with its various terminologies, as well as instructing students in basic laboratory safety and security principles. It also aims to contribute to the development of students’ intellectual and practical skills. The theoretical and practical aspects of the subject matter are coordinated to maximize student learning.
