Under the patronage of the President of the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Baha Ibrahim Ensaf, and supervised by the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Prof. Dr. Raghad Abdul Razzaq Mohammed, the College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific symposium entitled “Analyzing the Research Indicators of the University of Baghdad According to WOS.”
The lecture was delivered by Assist. Prof. Dr. Omar Faleh Al-Fatlawi, Director of the Quality Assurance and University Performance Department at the University of Baghdad.
The symposium was attended by the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Raghad Abdul Razzaq Mohammed, along with several deans of other colleges at the University of Baghdad, quality assurance unit officials, and a distinguished group of faculty members and staff.
The symposium aimed to shed light on the standards and indicators adopted by the Shanghai Global Ranking in evaluating universities and disciplines. The Shanghai Ranking is one of the most widely recognized academic rankings worldwide, focusing on academic and research performance. Its criteria include Nobel Prize winners, citation rates of published research in reputable international journals, and the number of publications in top-ranked journals.
Key topics discussed included:
- Analyzing strengths and weaknesses in evaluating the performance of University of Baghdad colleges across different disciplines in each indicator.
- Reviewing strategies for improving scientific indicators to ensure inclusion in the ranking, while identifying strengths and weaknesses.
The symposium concluded with several important recommendations:
- Encouraging faculty members to increase scientific publications in reputable journals in line with the university’s size, reputation, and historical standing.
- Establishing clear policies to educate faculty and postgraduate students on proper citation practices to strengthen the university’s position in global rankings.
- Recommending administrative and financial independence for the institution to reduce burdens on faculty members, enabling them to focus on research.
- Providing financial support for scientific publishing through a university fund dedicated to supporting researchers and academic activities.
- Forming multidisciplinary research teams to enhance the quality of research and raise the academic level of the college and university.
This symposium underscores the importance of developing the academic and research performance of the University of Baghdad to strengthen its position in global rankings, reflecting its rich history and scientific contributions.
