Under the patronage of the respected Dean of the College of Dentistry, Professor Dr. Raghad Abdul Razzaq Mohammed, the College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific seminar entitled “The Concept of Sustainable Development and Environmental Sustainability.” The seminar was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Sahar Hashim Abdul Karim and was attended by a number of faculty members of the college.

The seminar aimed to introduce the concept of sustainable development and environmental sustainability, highlight their importance, and discuss the current state of the environmental dimension in Iraq, along with its challenges and possible solutions.

The seminar covered several key themes, including:
1. Concepts and dimensions of sustainable development
2. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
3. Environmental sustainability in all its aspects
4. Obstacles to sustainable development
5. Iraq’s proposed and future vision for achieving sustainable development based on the country’s capabilities and characteristics

The seminar recommended the formation of specialized scientific committees and workshops, in cooperation with Iraqi universities, to establish mechanisms that serve the community across various fields contributing to improved sustainable development indicators. It also emphasized the need to develop development programs based on clear strategies prepared by qualified and experienced specialists to shape development policies in alignment with general national development policies.

Furthermore, the seminar stressed the importance of unifying official, academic, and community efforts to monitor the state of sustainable development in Iraq, identify strengths and weaknesses, and maintain communication with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) regarding development issues.
