Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Professor Dr. Ali Ismail Ibrahim.

The College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad organized a seminar entitled “The Histological Structure of the Pituitary Gland,” presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Rasha Abbas Aziz, and attended by a number of faculty members.

The seminar aimed to highlight the importance of the pituitary gland as the master gland of the body. Although small and located at the base of the brain, it plays a pivotal role by secreting vital hormones that regulate the function of other endocrine glands, such as the thyroid and adrenal glands. It contributes to the regulation of numerous vital functions, including growth, metabolism, reproduction, blood pressure, and fluid management, thus achieving homeostatic balance in the body.

The seminar was held under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Professor Dr. Ali Ismail Ibrahim. The seminar covered several topics, addressing the main functions of the pituitary gland, most notably: controlling growth and development through the secretion of growth hormone (GH), essential for bone and tissue growth and body formation; regulating metabolism and the stress response by stimulating the thyroid gland with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and the adrenal glands with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH); sexual and reproductive functions through the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), responsible for stimulating sperm production in males and ovulation and the secretion of estrogen and progesterone in females; lactation and childbirth through the secretion of prolactin, responsible for milk production, and oxytocin, which contributes to stimulating uterine contractions and promoting bonding; fluid and electrolyte balance through the secretion of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), which regulates fluid levels and salt concentration in the kidneys; and skin pigmentation through the secretion of melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH). The symposium also highlighted the direct link between the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, which controls hormone secretion according to the body’s various needs.

The symposium recommended maintaining pituitary gland health through a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats; managing stress to avoid elevated cortisol levels; regular exercise; protecting the head from injuries; reducing sugar and processed food intake; and emphasizing the importance of drinking sufficient water.
