Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad, Professor Dr. Ali Ismail Ibrahim.
The College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific seminar entitled “Orthodontic Management for Patients with Special Medical Conditions,” presented by Professor Dr. Shahbaa Abdul Ghafour, with the participation of faculty members and postgraduate students.
The seminar aimed to enhance orthodontists’ knowledge of how to manage patients with systemic diseases or chronic medical conditions that may affect the orthodontic treatment plan and its progress. It also addressed the impact of general illnesses and various medications on tooth movement, periodontal tissue response, and the risk of complications during treatment.
The seminar covered several topics, including the classification of patients with special medical conditions and the impact of systemic diseases on orthodontic treatment, such as heart disease, diabetes, blood disorders, and bone diseases. It also addressed the impact of chronic medications on tooth movement and periodontal tissue healing. Furthermore, the seminar reviewed risk assessment criteria before initiating treatment and emphasized the importance of obtaining a detailed medical history and seeking medical consultation when necessary. The symposium also addressed necessary adjustments to treatment plans, selection of appropriate appliances, minimizing treatment duration and applied forces, methods for preventing complications, and protocols for handling emergencies in the orthodontic clinic.
The symposium recommended the following:
1- Thorough medical evaluation before commencing orthodontic treatment.
2- Enhanced communication with physicians treating systemic conditions.
3- Alteration of treatment plans to suit the patient’s health status.
4- Increased awareness of safe management practices for patients with medical risks.
