Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Professor Dr. Ali Ismail Ibrahim.

The College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad organized a training course entitled “Design and Manufacturing of Removable Orthodontic Appliances,”

The training course aimed to develop the theoretical and practical skills of the participants in the design and manufacturing of removable orthodontic appliances used in orthodontics. It also clarified the biological and mechanical principles upon which these appliances operate in correcting certain malocclusions and tooth movement.
The course focused on understanding the components of a removable orthodontic appliance, such as the active elements, retainers, and acrylic base, in addition to how to select the appropriate design for each clinical case.

The training course included several topics covering the definition of removable orthodontic appliances and their role in treating certain types of malocclusions during the growth stage. It also discussed the basic principles of removable appliance design and the factors affecting their therapeutic effectiveness. The course covers the components of removable orthodontic appliances, such as wire brackets, fixation elements, springs, orthodontic screws, and acrylic bases, explaining the function of each part. It also addresses the steps involved in appliance design based on orthodontic diagnosis and clinical analysis. Furthermore, it covers the practical stages of appliance fabrication in the orthodontic laboratory and methods for adjusting and clinically fitting appliances during treatment. In addition, case studies were presented to demonstrate how to select the appropriate design to achieve optimal treatment outcomes.

The training course recommended the following:

• Enhancing practical training in the design and fabrication of removable orthodontic appliances.

• Selecting appliance designs based on accurate diagnosis and treatment plans.

• Adhering to scientific standards in the fabrication of orthodontic appliances.

• Following up with patients to ensure the achievement of the desired treatment results.
