Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Professor Dr. Ali Ismail Ibrahim, the College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific seminar entitled “The Safe Uses of Nuclear Energy,” delivered by Professor Dr. Salem Jalood Atiyah and attended by a number of the College’s academic staff members.

The seminar aimed to introduce the peaceful applications of nuclear energy and explore its potential uses across various fields of life. It also highlighted the role of nuclear energy in accelerating development and meeting the growing global demand for energy.

The seminar covered several scientific topics, including nuclear power generation, nuclear medicine, sterilization, agricultural applications, industrial applications, environmental protection, food irradiation, and space-related applications. In addition, it reviewed the benefits and risks of nuclear energy, the safety requirements associated with its use, and the role of international nuclear regulatory frameworks in ensuring the peaceful and secure utilization of this technology.

The seminar concluded with recommendations emphasizing the importance of adhering to the guidelines and regulations established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure the safe handling of nuclear energy sources. Such compliance contributes to maximizing the scientific, medical, and societal benefits of nuclear technology while protecting the public from potential associated risks.
